Haruki Murakami’s short story Drive My Car, though not very long, is profound and highly regarded by experts. This is what prompted the production team to bring this work to the small screen, through the delicate perspective of Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, and is also an extraordinary three-hour experience. Hamaguchi and co-writer Takamasa Oe not only expanded on the brief source material but also dared to incorporate one of the greatest literary works in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya into the structure of their script. The main character in this movie is Yusuke Kafuku, a gentle man with a kind face, and also a famous stage actor and director. Two years after the sudden death of his wife, Yusuke Kafuku received an invitation to direct a play Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari, a quiet young woman assigned by the festival to drive him around in his beloved red Saab 900. As the play’s premiere approaches, tensions rise between the cast and crew, especially between Yusuke and Koshi Takatsuki, a handsome TV star with an unwanted connection to Yusuke’s late wife. Forced to confront painful truths from his past, Yusuke begins to confront the haunting mysteries left behind by his wife.
