Beneath the scorching sun and dusty haze of a poor neighborhood in Tunisia, twelve-year-old Noura lives out his childhood in the loving embrace of his mother and grandmother, two gentle Muslim women, tender as summer afternoons where sunlight filters softly through lace curtains. Noura’s world is one of lullabies, the warm scent of morning bread, and quiet stories of faith, patience, and unconditional love.

But such innocence cannot last forever. As his body begins to change, and his soul stirs with feelings he cannot yet name, Noura slowly steps beyond that safe haven and into an unfamiliar realm: the world of men, a world where gentleness is mistaken for weakness, where brows are furrowed, voices sharp like commands, and hearts seem hidden beneath layers of duty and age-old tradition.

His long-absent father suddenly returns, bringing with him both strangeness and the silent weight of expectations. Cousins, neighbors, even the boys in the alley, all seem to echo the same unspoken message: it’s time to “become a man.” But what does it mean to be a man? Must one be loud, firm, and unfeeling toward the delicate things? Must he shed the softness of his spirit and wear strength like armor?

In the quiet corners of his inner world, Noura begins to feel the first stirrings of desire, vague, confusing, and at times frightening. These emotions are unlike the “boy-meets-girl” tales whispered among adults. Instead, they belong to a realm of blurred emotions, beautiful yet laced with guilt under the stern gaze of society.
