This is a powerfully executed and sensitively-themed film about a man caught up in a world of depravity beyond his control. Despite trying to make it a dramatic film, it fails, like so many others, by not having the courage to be as dark or extreme as Srdjan Spasojevic’s infamous horror film. Director Oman Dhas takes Hotel De Sade into the depths of depravity, but never dives in. So while there are all sorts of sick acts, most of them remain unseen, leaving anyone looking for the next big thing in transgressive cinema sorely disappointed.

The film revolves around Zhang Li, who believes he is responsible for the death of his daughter Scarlet. In an attempt to forget his sins, he inflicts physical pain on himself, as prostitutes do. An encounter with a pimp leads to a visit to the depraved secret brothel Paradise, where customers can indulge their wildest and most perverse desires. Zhang Li asks to be subjected to torture, where he discovers the truth about his daughter’s fate.
