The film’s protagonist is Andrei Parabuac, a young documentary filmmaker from Manila. One day, he books a month’s stay at the colorful Honta de Balay in Sagada to make a film about the Puerto Antimano art scene using old analog technology. He plans to interview three legendary artists who worked there, namely poet Butch Alipato, painter Patring Cordero, and filmmaker Eric Salamanca.

On the first night, Andrei immediately catches the attention of Ingrid, a film director and resident of Balay. The next day, Andrei meets Lira, a published novelist who invites him to a poetry reading party hosted by her uncle, Butch, with whom Andrei had an unpleasant first encounter that morning. Andrei and Lira hit it off and quickly become intimate. From there, a very complicated love story begins.

Ikaw Lang Ang Mahal is a well-made film, with a pretty good opening that’s classic, aesthetically pleasing, and uplifting in a fun way. Promising but not particularly special, that’s what it delivers. Written by Jim Flores and directed by Richard Somes, this latest Vivamax original starts off pretty impressively. It touches on a few really interesting ideas here and there. There’s a lot to like about this film.
