The main character in the film is Martha de Jesus, a beautiful and talented woman, but her fate is very ironic when her first child cannot be born, causing her to become mentally unstable. Not only that, her heartless husband Carlo (Rash Flores) is cold to her and has an affair with his lover. Her mother Lourdes (Tabs Sumulong) has amnesia, does not recognize her and continues to search for her missing sister Aurora. During a medical examination, Martha and Carlo have a car accident, and are transferred to a rural hospital in the town of Nilapakan. Later, Martha is a new nurse, assigned to carry a suitcase full of medicine for the natives to the Isla Bato medical center. She is taken to the island by the boatman Rolly (Massimo Scofield), and hitches a ride on a motorbike driven by Leloy (Sean de Guzman) to the clinic, where she is picked up by the midwife Tess (Jela Cuenca). But from here, fascinating and captivating stories unfold.

Veteran director Joel Lamangan brings a fresh take on Vivamax’s adult fare, transporting audiences to a world of painful reality and nightmarish fantasy between life and death. Religion is a huge part of the story, with a fervent preacher (Rolly Innocencio) on the bus Martha takes on her way to Nilapakan. Or Isla Bato, a fanatical cult that practices terrifying baptisms, healings, and funerals.

The story is there but the execution is lacking, as the film is only an hour and a half long, but the pacing feels sluggish and doesn’t do much to convey ideas. The scenes drag on unnecessarily and are peppered with confusing dialogue. Overall, the film is incomplete but still worth watching.
