For Hong Kong film buffs, Chor Yuen’s Lust For Love of A Chinese Courtesan is certainly a familiar name, a film released in 1984 that was immediately rated. It’s not exactly a remake of the 1972 classic, but a new take on the template in which Ai Nu (Nancy Hu) is forced into prostitution under the watchful but loving eye of Lady Chun (Candice Yu). This time, however, the story doesn’t take the revenge route, instead moving towards something akin to a thinking man’s erotic exploitation, with surprisingly good results.
Here, Ai Nu is taught the ways of the world, where sacrificing one’s innocence and purity in exchange for wealth is the norm. One character even describes the outside world as no better, so accept what lies within the confines of the brothel. Instead, Ai Nu’s journey becomes a story of rediscovering and holding on to innocence, but more importantly, love, without being swallowed up by the world of rich men where women are just emotionless servants.
However, Intimate Confessions Of A Chinese Courtesan lacks depth to its characters, especially Chun. Ai Nu and Chun’s relationship also has different motivations as Ai Nu does not want revenge. The film also lacks the charm and full impact of the original film. This creates an unpleasant contrast between the two halves, but the subsequent increase in quality in the subject makes many of the shortcomings forgettable.
