Simon Yam is a big name in Hong Kong cinema, known for films such as Ip Man, Election,.. playing extremely ridiculous thugs. This time, he has an impressive role in Street Angels (1996), although this is a work labeled 18+. In addition, the film features Shu Qi, who later became a favorite actress of many audiences, in one of her first film roles, but it left a strong impression.
The film itself is quite well built, with reasonable plot development, reasonable characters and good acting. The flashy outside world, dirty inside the bars of Portland Street are well visualized despite the low budget thanks to some very professional lighting and good use of real local settings. In terms of characters, the film tells the story of Tung Yen, who is imprisoned because of her boyfriend, Walkie Pi, after they kill a gang boss together. On the other hand, Walkie Pi escapes to the Netherlands. While Tung Yen is out, she has an affair with the club owner, Playboy Man, and manages the girls at his club.
