Scud is a director of BL movies in HK, although not famous, his movies are often very special. And “Utopians” is quite different from Scud’s recent movies. The movie has philosophical, religious and political elements, which is a first for Scud’s movies. The story is told in a linear way, making it easy for viewers to understand. In addition, the artistic elements in “Utopians” are clearly shown, even to the untrained eye.
The movie revolves around the character Hins Gao (Adonis He Fei), a young student who is curious about the things of adolescence. One day, he unexpectedly finds himself deeply attracted to his male professor, Antonio Ming (Jackie Chow). Despite being raised conservatively, Hins wants to get close enough to Ming to understand him. This experience changes his life and shapes his adult identity. The story is described as “a free-flowing ode to love and sexuality that combines narrative and fantasy elements”.
